Acupuncture for Migraine Relief in Lindenhurst, NY
Treatment aimed at what sets your headaches off rather than at the headache itself. For migraines, tension headaches, and the pattern underneath both.
Why It Helps
Treating the pattern, not the episode
Most migraine care is reactive. You feel one coming, you take something, you wait it out in a dark room. That has its place, and nothing here replaces it. What acupuncture works on is the state your body is in between episodes, which is where frequency actually gets decided.
Fine needles at specific points prompt the release of endorphins, the body's own painkillers, and lower the production of cortisol, the hormone behind the stress response. Both matter here, because stress is one of the most consistent triggers people report and cortisol is the mechanism underneath it.
Treatment also improves circulation and reduces inflammation in the tissue around the neck and shoulders. Where headaches are being driven from the neck rather than the head, that is the thing worth changing. Acupuncture has been used for tension headaches for a long time, and research on chronic pain including headache has been consistent enough that it is now a mainstream referral rather than a fringe one.
Know Your Pattern
What sets yours off?

Where They Come From
Three patterns we see most
Stress-driven
Headaches that arrive after the pressure lifts rather than during it, or that track with sleep. Acupuncture lowers cortisol production directly, which is why treating the stress often does more than treating the head.
Neck-driven
Pain that starts at the base of the skull and travels forward, usually with shoulders that have not been loose in months. Here the muscle work matters as much as the point work.
Trigger-driven
Weather, light, food, or seasonal allergies setting off a predictable response. Where allergies are in the picture, NAET allergy elimination addresses a cause that point work alone will not reach.
On Long Island the seasonal shape of this is hard to miss. Spring brings the pollen headaches. Summer brings the pressure swings that come with storms rolling across the South Shore. Winter brings the desk-bound necks and the sinus headaches that arrive with the first hard cold. Most patients can name their season before they can name their trigger.
How We Treat It
Rarely needles alone
Where the neck is driving it, acupuncture and massage in the same visit does more than either alone, because the muscle stays released long enough for the point work to hold. Where circulation through the shoulders is the bottleneck, cupping works by decompression rather than pressure.
Some patients do best with ear work. Auriculotherapy treats the whole body through points mapped across the outer ear, and we have written about ear stapling for migraines specifically. If that sounds like a fit, ear acupuncture is the treatment to ask about.
And where the headache is one part of a broader pain picture, acupuncture for pain relief is the wider frame. Your first visit decides which of these applies.
When to see a physician first
Acupuncture is a complementary therapy and works alongside medical care rather than in place of it. A headache that is sudden and severe, different from anything you have had before, or that comes with fever, confusion, weakness, vision loss, or follows a head injury needs medical evaluation, not an acupuncture appointment. Keep taking anything your physician has prescribed and bring the list to your first visit so we can plan around it. Individual results vary.
Common Questions
Questions we get asked
Can I come in during a migraine?
Some patients do and find the session helps. Many find it easier to keep a regular appointment schedule and treat between episodes, since the goal is to change how often they arrive rather than to end one in progress. Call and we will work out which suits you.
How many sessions before I notice a difference?
Acupuncture is cumulative rather than immediate, so it is planned as a course rather than a single visit. Your practitioner sets the number at your first appointment based on your history and how your body responds between visits. Individual results vary.
Do I have to stop my migraine medication?
No. Acupuncture works alongside conventional care, and any change to prescribed medication is a conversation for the physician who prescribed it. Bring your current list to your first visit.
Does it hurt, given my head already hurts?
The needles are ultra-fine and nothing like those used for injections. Most patients report feeling the placement and very little after that, and many find the session relaxing enough to fall asleep during it. Points are not always placed near the head.
Is acupuncture for migraines covered by insurance?
Many plans cover acupuncture and coverage depends on your policy. Submit your details through our intake and insurance page and we will verify your benefits before your first visit.
