Acupuncture and Active Release Therapy in Lindenhurst, NY
Acupuncture and Active Release Therapy in one session at our Lindenhurst center, for scar tissue, restricted movement, and pain that has not responded to anything else.
Why Pair Them
One relaxes the tissue, the other releases it
Active Release Therapy is a hands-on technique that breaks up scar tissue and adhesions in muscles, tendons, and ligaments. The practitioner applies pressure to a specific area while you move the affected part through a range of motion, which is what makes it work where passive treatment does not.
Acupuncture does something different. It stimulates points that improve blood flow and circulation, reduce inflammation, and prompt the body's own healing response.
Run in the same session, the order matters. Acupuncture relaxes the body first, which makes the ART techniques easier to perform effectively and reduces the discomfort that can come with the release work. You get further into the tissue with less bracing against it.
The needle work here is the same medicine used in general acupuncture treatment. What the pairing adds is a hands-on technique that reaches adhesions no amount of point work will release on its own.
Restores movement
ART is a specialized technique that requires extensive training. It has been shown to improve range of motion, reduce pain, and restore function in sports injuries, repetitive strain injuries, and chronic conditions such as carpal tunnel syndrome.
It also supports post-surgical recovery and helps prevent future injury by improving how the muscle actually functions.
Treats the system
Acupuncture has been used for centuries across a wide range of conditions, from chronic pain and digestive complaints through to stress and anxiety.
It works by stimulating specific points to balance energy flow and promote healing, which brings reduced inflammation, improved circulation, and lower stress along with it.

Who Benefits
All ages, all activity levels
Active Release Therapy and acupuncture are not only for athletes, though athletes do well with them.
Athletes
Professional and amateur alike, for performance, injury prevention, and getting back after something goes wrong.
Desk workers
Long hours seated and repetitive motion produce the exact tension and strain patterns ART is built to release.
Chronic conditions
Carpal tunnel syndrome, fibromyalgia, and arthritis, where targeting specific muscle groups gives longer-term relief.
Post-surgical recovery
Improving range of motion, decreasing scar tissue formation, and reducing the pain that follows surgery or injury.
On Long Island this skews seasonal. Winter fills the schedule with desk-bound necks and shoulders that have not moved properly since October. Spring brings the first weekend of yard work, the first round of golf, the boat coming out of storage, and a run of strains from bodies that were not ready. If the complaint is general tension rather than a specific restriction, acupuncture and massage is the gentler pairing. If stress is holding the pattern in place, acupuncture and reiki reaches that side of it.
Booking
ART appointments are booked by phone
Active Release Therapy at The Balance Health and Wellness Center is performed by Michael D'Antona, L.Ac. Because ART requires specialized training and the session is built around your specific restriction, these appointments are scheduled by calling the office rather than through the online booking system.
Your practitioner evaluates your condition at the start of the session and determines which techniques suit it. That evaluation is why the treatment is worth booking properly rather than slotting into a generic appointment.
If you want the release work without the acupuncture, Active Release Therapy on its own is also available. Where a restriction sits in tissue that responds better to decompression than to pressure, your practitioner may bring cupping therapy into the plan instead.
Treatment runs at our Lindenhurst center and at the Kings Park office, where Active Release Therapy is one of the core North Shore services. The practice has been led since 2004 by Joseph A. D'Antona, DAOM.
Common Questions
Questions we get asked
Why can I not book ART online?
Active Release Therapy is performed by Michael D'Antona, L.Ac., and the session is built around your specific restriction rather than slotted into a standard appointment length. Booking by phone lets the front desk match the appointment to what you actually need. Call 631-309-2242.
Does Active Release Therapy hurt?
The practitioner applies pressure to the affected muscle while you move that body part through a range of motion, so there is sensation involved and patients describe it as intense rather than painless. Running acupuncture first is specifically intended to reduce that discomfort by relaxing the tissue before the release work begins.
Do I need to be an athlete for this to be worth it?
No. Desk workers make up a large share of who books it, because long hours seated and repetitive motion produce the same adhesions a sports injury does. It is also used for post-surgical recovery and for chronic conditions such as carpal tunnel syndrome, fibromyalgia and arthritis.
What happens at the first appointment?
Your practitioner evaluates your condition and determines which techniques suit it before any treatment begins. That evaluation is the reason the appointment is booked properly rather than generically, and it shapes everything that follows.
Is it covered by insurance?
Many treatments here are covered and it depends on your plan. Submit your details through our intake and insurance page and we will verify benefits before your first visit.
★★★★★I grew up dealing with chronic knee pain from Osgood-Schlatter disease. I played sports my whole life, pushed through the pain, tried everything. Michael is knowledgeable, thorough, and has a true gift for this work. He listened to my history, understood the underlying issue immediately, and delivered results that years of other treatments never came close to.
