What Sits Here
The treatments that do not fit anywhere else
Alternative medicine is a broad label, and in this practice it covers a specific group: the hands-on and device-based treatments that reach things needles and medication do not. They have less in common with each other than they do in what they replace.
What connects them is mechanism rather than category. Suction instead of pressure. Movement combined with manual release. Acoustic pulses into tissue. Each one solves a problem that resisted a more obvious approach, which is usually how patients end up here in the first place.
None of these are stand-alone in most treatment plans. They sit alongside acupuncture and massage therapy as part of a wider plan, and the decision about which one belongs in yours happens at your first appointment rather than on this page.
Four Approaches
Open one to see how it works
Four different mechanisms. Select one and the panel expands.
Cupping Therapy
Decompression rather than pressure. Cups draw tissue upward instead of pushing down into it, which reaches restriction that responds badly to being compressed. Used for pain, inflammation, blood flow and general relaxation.
Active Release Therapy
Manual pressure applied while you move the affected part through a range of motion. That combination is what breaks up scar tissue and adhesion in muscles, tendons and ligaments. Performed by Michael D'Antona, L.Ac.
Acoustic Wave Therapy
Acoustic pulses directed into tissue, for pain management and tissue response. The one on this list most patients have never heard of, and often arrive having been referred to by someone else.
Ear Candling
A gentle cleansing treatment for the ear itself. Worth being clear that this is not auriculotherapy and does not treat anything elsewhere in the body, a distinction people regularly arrive confused about.

Specialist treatments, one practice
Trained specifically
Active Release Therapy in particular requires extensive training rather than a weekend course, and not every practice on Long Island offers it. Ours does, under a named practitioner.
Combined, not siloed
These treatments are most effective inside a plan. Cupping alongside acupuncture. Release work alongside point work in the same session. That coordination is the point of one roof.
Nothing prescribed
Every treatment in this category is drug-free and non-pharmaceutical. All of it works alongside whatever your physician has you on rather than replacing any of it.
The practice has been led since 2004 by Joseph A. D'Antona, DAOM, and voted best on Long Island for acupuncture and massage therapy every year since 2011. More about the practice, or browse holistic medicine for the diagnostic and preventive side.
Common Questions
Questions we get asked
What counts as alternative medicine here?
In this practice it covers cupping therapy, Active Release Therapy, acoustic wave therapy and ear candling. All are drug-free and hands-on or device-based, and all work alongside conventional medical care rather than replacing it.
Which one do I need?
That is decided at your first appointment rather than in advance. Most patients arrive with a problem rather than a treatment in mind, which is the right way round. Call and the front desk will help you work out where to start.
Can these be combined with acupuncture?
Yes, and they usually are. Cupping frequently runs in the same visit as point work, and acupuncture with Active Release Therapy exists as a combined appointment because the two reinforce each other.
Does any of this replace my doctor?
No. Everything here is complementary care. Keep taking anything you have been prescribed and bring the list to your first appointment so treatment can be planned around it.
Is alternative medicine covered by insurance?
Coverage depends on your plan and what is being treated. Submit your details through our intake and insurance page and we will verify benefits before your first visit.
